It helps to attract relevant traffic to your website, convert visitors into leads, boost search engine optimization, connect people to your brand, and establish your business as an industry leader.
So why should you consider migrating your website blog over to HubSpot?
First, I would like to start out by saying that we decided to do this with our website many months back and for quite a few reasons. HubSpot is a great marketing automation platform that allows us to create “smart” content, landing pages, offers, and CTAs all in one. It is very easy to analyze the content we put out there and personalize it based on the type of visitors we receive. What we mean by “smart” content is that the landing pages and blog posts change based on the person’s profile and the forms fill out automatically with the first name, email, etc…
Now that I have put in my little pitch for HubSpot, I would like to get you started on creating your very own HubSpot blog. Each post page you create will look similar to the other content on your site and the transition is quite seamless. (Note: Migrating your content is very fast and secure, so there should be no worries there.)
Here are the 3 main steps:
A. In the top bar, click on Content > Content Settings
1. Left sidebar, click on Blog > General
a. Under Blog Options for Default HubSpot Blog, click on the “Add New Blog” button
i. Blog Name (Ex: Architecture and Design with the URL
ii. Blog URL
iii. Click the “Create blog” button
2. Blog Name – name of your blog for internal purposes (Ex: Architecture and Design)
3. Blog Header – title you would like to display on the page (Ex: Architecture and Design)
4. Page Title – this will appear in the browser title bar and search results
(Ex: Architecture and Design)
5. Meta Description – Used for meta description tag in blog post pages
(Ex: Blog posts all about architecture and design.)
6. Header HTML for Blog Listing Pages – If you have custom HTML that you would like to apply to the footer or header of your individual articles you can add it here.
7. Blog Root URL – Make sure that you have the correct subdomain selected in the dropdown (Ex: http://resources.spearheadsalesmarketing.com/architecture-and-design)
and click “Save Changes“
(NOTE: You can create multiple blog section names by repeating the steps above. You can go to our main menu under “Resources” to view all of the blog sections we created on our site.)
A. Navigate to Content > Blog to see the blog page’s main overview.
1. If you have multiple blogs, you will need to toggle to the proper blog you would like the article to be placed in. (Ex: Blog | Architecture and Design)
2. In the top right, click the blue button “New blog post“
a. You can select to create “Blank Post” or “Post Blueprint” (We recommend clicking on Post Blueprint to help give you ideas for your first post.)
i. Name the blog post by inserting your title to the right of the red pencil icon.
ii. Copy and paste the excerpt content you want to show on the main blog page
iii. Under Read More Separator [“more…”] copy the remainder of the content that you want to display on the individual article page.
iv. Insert an image into your body copy by clicking on the insert image icon and “Upload a File” to save your image in HubSpot.
3. Configure Settings
a. Click on “Settings” at the top of the post to edit the URL, select an author, add a topic, add a campaign, add a meta description, and post a featured image.
i. You can click one of the images to display your chosen image or click the [+] icon to upload a different image. You can also click off on this feature if you don’t want to use a featured image.
4. Optimize Your Post
a. Click on the “Optimize” icon to the left.
i. Under “Based on your title, this blog post is about“, you can add keywords to optimize your post.
ii. Under “To-Do” follow the recommendations to optimize your post.
iii. Click the link at top of the page to “Save” / “Publish or Schedule” your post.
III. Set up redirects from your old blog post page to the new HubSpot URLs
A. With any WordPress site, you can easily add a redirect plugin if you don’t already have one installed. Follow these simple steps:
1. Backup your website before adding the plugin. Most of our sites are hosted on WP Engine, so we do the backup in there.
2. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
3. Under “Plugins” click “Add New“. (NOTE: First check to make sure that it is compatible with your version of WordPress. We currently use “Redirection” by John Godley.) Once the plugin has been added you will find it under Tools > Redirection.
a. Make sure the settings diplay the match as “URL only” and the action is set to “Redirect to URL“.
b. Add your Source URL – This will be the old post URL you were using. (Ex: https://www.yourspear.com /architectural-branding/. You can shorten this to /architectural-branding/.)
c. Target URL – This will be the new URL post page you created in HubSpot. (Ex: http://resources.spearheadsalesmarketing.com/architecture-and-design/architectural-branding)
d. Don’t forget to log out of WordPress and test the old URL in a new tab to make sure that it is redirecting properly to your newly created blog post page.
